Slaves nor Aliens built the Pyramids

Posted by Ethan Clow on January 20, 2010

Pseudo history is one of those topics that never goes away no matter how much evidence you throw at it. I actually blogged about this very fact over at Skeptic North a few weeks ago.

Egypt recently put on display a series of tombs around the Great Pyramids of Giza that demonstrate that the pyramids were not built by slaves. Read about it here. Now, on Radio Freethinker we had previously talked about there being no evidence for Jewish slaves in Egypt and now we have evidence that slaves (regardless of nationality) didn’t build the pyramids. So who did?

The assertion is that paid labourers built the impressive landmarks. The evidence is that the tombs being built so close to the pyramids indicates that the builders were from poor families, who were paid for the their labour and were respected enough to be buried next to their Pharaoh. Now we might guff at this but to an ancient Egyptian, this was probably a huge honour. The tombs contained remnants of food and items that would indicate that the workers were paid, given a better quality of food then typical Egyptian subjects, and were probably treated with some degree of respect.

This is a good example of evidence based research being done in other fields besides science. Often in skepticism we think of only the sciences, but this shows that fields like history, anthropology and archaeology are also evidence based and require critical thinking and solid evidence.

What this also proves is that humans built the pyramids. As opposed to “Ancient Astronauts.”  A rather extraordinary suggestion that human civilization (art, myths, social organization) were all introduced by aliens.  This claim is most famously promoted by Erich von Däniken author of Chariots of the Gods, written in 1968.  Daniken suggests that the pyramids and other ancient architecture is too advanced to be created by humans and that aliens were the ones who built them.  He cites examples like artwork from ancient civilizations that look like space ships. He also claims that unconnected civilizations that created similar art must have had contact with each other via aliens.

So what’s his evidence?

He made some of it up. He forged evidence that was discovered to be fake by a Nova documentary.

The rest of his evidence is taking a conclusion (ancient astronauts) and then retro fitting data to prove it. All sorts of logically fallacies are found in his work, especially the either or fallacy. “Either these archaeological structures were built by stupid primitive humans or more plausibly, they were built by aliens from a distant world with anti-gravity and faster than light technology.”

Despite the fact that his theories have been thoroughly debunked and that Daniken admitted to creating fraudulent pieces of evidence and that Chariots has been accused of plagiarizing ideas from HP Lovecraft…

Theories of ancient astronauts and pseudo history continue.

Graham Hancock is a writer and pseudo-archaeologists who claims that Atlantis, or possibly Aliens from Atlantis, helped create the many civilizations on Earth. He’s also written extensively on the “face on mars.”

He suggests that the common source for ancient civilizations like Egypt and Mesoamerica is Atlantis. But there are some huge problems with such a theory. I won’t go into them all (simply because that would take hours and hours) but here’s one that I find really odd: why would Atlantis teach Egyptians one language and Mesoamerica another language. Why would Atlantis tell Egypt to use their pyramids as tombs and nothing more and Mesoamerica to use their pyramids for sacrifices? Why wouldn’t Atlantis share step making with Egyptians like they obviously did with Mesoamerica?

(Okay, that was three.)

I read the post its pretty interesting. However it is said that the location of the Pyramids is in corelation to the Leo Constellation. Did we have that kind of technology to calculate the distance between the stars from the Earth. Even the height of the pyramid (481 feet) is almost exactly 1/1,000,000,000 of the distance from the earth to the sun (480.6 billion feet)? There are many such mathematical calculations which doesnt erase the possibility that Aliens might have a hand in the making of the Pyramids.
