Skeptical Questions for Politicians and their Answers

Last week we sent out a quick ten question survey to all the candidates in Vancouver’s five federal ridings. Stay tuned to this post for updates including when and how each candidate answers. UPDATED

We sent out the following questions:

1. Canada is a ‘Christian’ nation.

2.  Religious belief should be legally protected from ridicule.

3. Complementary and alternative medicine (such as naturopathy, chiropractic medicine, herbalism, biofeedback, hypnosis, homeopathy and/or acupuncture) should be given equal support in our public health system

4. Childhood vaccinations should be mandatory

5. Law enforcement should be barred from employing psychics in investigations

6. The evidence for alien visitation is “overwhelmingly positive”

7. Science is just one way of “knowing”

8. Scientists who work for the government should not be curtailed or censored in any way if they want to take their findings to the media or wish to publish their findings in scientific journals or periodicals.

9. Human beings have evolved over time in a random process absent of any control or design by a higher power

10. The age of the Earth is around 4 billion years.

They were sent to the five federal ridings of Vancouver Vancouver Centre, Vancouver East, Vancouver Kingsway, Vancouver Quadra, and Vancouver South
A total of 29 candidates got the questions as well as all the party headquarters as well.

Responses:

As of April 22nd – only two have responded.

Douglas Roy of the Green Party in Vancouver East. In 2008 the green party got 11.3%. NDP won @ 54.4%. Teaches Aboriginal Studies at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou, China. Program Coordinator for Vancouver Community College.

Laura-Leah Shaw of the Green Party in Vancouver Quadra. In 2008 the green party got 8.83%. Lib won with 45.6% but came in 3rd over the NDP. Laura-Leah is a realtor.

Kimball Cariou of Vancouver Kingsway, in the Communist Party of Canada has responded.

2.  Religious belief should be legally protected from ridicule. (Di Carlo – 1 strongly disagree)

3. Complementary and alternative medicine (such as naturopathy, chiropractic medicine, herbalism, biofeedback, hypnosis, homeopathy and/or acupuncture) should be given equal support in our public health system (Di Carlo – 5 strongly agree)
