The Midas Mind: Explorations of the Golden Section

Skeptical Highlights:

Wear a poppy to commemorate the end of the First World War which was on November 11 1918. Nowadays wearing a poppy symbolizes the terrible toll that war takes where ever it’s fought. So I encourage you to pick up a poppy and also, open up a history book and take some time to reflect on things.

Inappropriate Political Pressure

UNESCO funding in peril over a vote of its members to approve Palestinian bid for statehood at the UN.

The Obama administration…Obama the Peace Prize winner…announced immediately after the vote that the US is suspending payment of $60million in dues the US owed to UNESCO. Our own Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, says Canada considering its response and may follow suit a not pay our own $10million due.

Why is this interesting? First, it brings to light the double standard the US and Canada has towards nations in conflict IE Israel is the victim Palestine the aggressor.

It also shows that although in principle Canada has professed support for democracy, whenever the results are not to our liking we attempt to subvert the “will of the people”, be that as it may, to force a vote we like…be it Gaza electing the wrong government of the UN supporting statehood.

Lastly, is this the fight you want to pick? For those of you who don’t know UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. These are the people responsible for World Heritage Sites, International Council of Science. They support World Press Freedom Day, One of their core issues is the eradication of illiteracy in the world. THIS is where you want to cut funding?

As I said, it’s a current news item and something you should be aware of and if you are so minded, let both your local MP and our illustrious Foreign Affairs Minster know.
